Frequently Asked Questions & Important Documents

What is WiFi In Motion? WiFi In Motion is a packaged wireless Internet access solution that includes a high-gain antenna, a 3-watt amplifier, a 3G mobile router, and all the accessories you need to create your own hot spot.

What is a “hot spot”? This refers to an invisible radius that contains wireless Internet access. Because antennas release wireless signals in a radius, the “spot” is formed. Our mobile Internet access solution will create a mobile hotspot that travels with you.

Is this secure? Yes. This is one of the main benefits of our system over using free Wi-Fi networks. Those networks are unsecure, and therefore all of your data can possibly be viewed by others.

While it is possible to leave your router "unlocked" (no password required for entry), we recommend securing your router using encryption. Our router handles WEP, WPA, and WPA2. We ship them out encrypted with WPA. We can also pre-configure the router at no additional charge with your own custom network name and password. If you would prefer to not have us configure the router for you, or if you ever need to change the network name and password, download our simple instruction here: Configuring Your Router

Does WiFi In Motion use satellite? No. WiFi In Motion uses cellular networks as the backbone. It works with all U.S. carriers, except Nextel.

Does the WiFi In Motion anywhere Internet access kit need to be professionally installed? No. You can easily install the WiFi In Motion Internet access system yourself. However, there may be some applications where professional installation may be recommended. Download our Installation Guide as a way to help determine if you will install it yourself, or if you will have a professional do it.

If I do get it installed, how long will it take? A typical installation should take about 1 to 1 ½ hours.

Do I have to pay a monthly fee? Yes. The kit does require an activated data card or compatible cell phone with tethered USB cable. If you are a part-timer, be sure to ask your cellular provider if they offer “seasonal standby” options. This is an option to “freeze” your account when you don’t need to use it.

How does this compare to satellite? While satellite serves as a very good solution, the WiFi In Motion Internet access solution is more affordable (satellite in-motion systems can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $9,000 for equipment). Satellite also requires monthly subscriptions, which start at $60, but are typically over $130 for similar speeds that you will get on our system.

What will my coverage look like? Each cell phone company has its’ own respective coverage maps. Depending on which cellular provider you select, your coverage will vary. Keep in mind that the amplifier and antenna included in the kit will expand your coverage capabilities. Take a look at the following links to determine which provider may be best for you. [ Sprint ] [ Verizon Wireless ] [ AT&T ]

What speeds can I expect? Speeds will vary by carrier. On CDMA networks (Verizon Wireless and Sprint) your average download (example would be downloading a song) speeds will range between 400 and 800 kbps, and can burst up to 3 mbps. AT&T and TMobile also offer comparable speeds, however, they offer slightly less coverage. It is best to check out each carrier, and also ask your peers for their recommendation.

I have heard that the “unlimited” data plans are not truly unlimited. Is that accurate? This is correct. Most cellular companies have adopted a limitation on their unlimited plans. Most are limited to 5 gigabytes of data per month. To better help you identify what 5 gigabytes looks like, take a look at the following spreadsheet:
